I am leaving a copy of this message on Naikiw's wall, since you have both made contributions to and care about the wiki's design. I would make a forum post instead, but, now we have Discussions and Discussions are terrible.
Not sure how much you keep up with the staff blog, but I believe today's post by CzechOut is relevant to us. Awhile ago I took steps to embrace "portability" in the wiki's design, because Wikia was pushing it. At the time, I left our Navboxes alone. They do not work on mobile views, but Wikia said they were going to come up with an alternative. Flash forward, and apparently "come up with an alternative" meant "do nothing".
I wanted to ask if you had any ideas on what we might do with our navboxes. It seems like Wikia is moving away from them (they already do not appear on Mobile), and while Wikia has yet to outright sabotage the feature, that has not stopped them from pushing mobile features onto the desktop before (again, see the replacement of the perfectly functional Forums with the vastly inferior Discussions).
I am wondering if we should not get rid of navboxes and rely on categories for grouping relevant pages together. It would be somewhat simpler and it is also the method Wikia recommends. Personally, I think our navboxes look better and are more functional than categories alone, but they are not irreplaceable. And honestly, I would like to address this before it becomes an issue later down the road.
Anyway, long message is long, please let me know what you think, and because I never say it enough: thank you for your time and effort.
I agree that nav boxes are better. I think as long as they're still around, we might as well use them, but we probably shouldn't rely on them too much. We should focus on using both for the time being. Most nav boxes that I can think of are already part of a category anyway. If there's not much of an alternative, I guess we could try to put more navigation info in the infoboxes, but I'm not sure how we could make that look good. Otherwise, we might have to deal with mobile mode having limited navigation for now.
I will say, I think it would be a good idea to put a category hub on the main page for both the desktop and mobile versions (Like links to the category pages for characters, locations, etc). That woukd be a good way to embrace categories more.
Thank you Simok1234 for the suggestions. When you have a mo', please give my sandbox a look. I have put together a mock up of a modified front page that incorporates some of the major categories. Beneath that is a gallery version of the same information. And beneath that is a new infobox that incorporates some of the relevant navbox information. Please let me know what you think.
Separate from that, I think I am just going to edit our categories to be more robust. The contents of the Template:CharactersNav for example could very easily be broken into categories: Araragi Family, Heroines, Oddity Specialists, Hearsay Police Department, Vampire Hunters, and Other/Minor Characters.
I have never browsed Wikia on my phone (I suppose that makes me a dinosaur), so I never think about the mobile UX. Don't know if you do, but if you do notice something egregious, feel free to give me a prod.
-I like both the gallery and smaller version, but I think the smaller one fits a the page neater, so I'd go with that one (unless that's what's causing the slider to be formatted weird?)
-I'd remove the text under the titles in the small version if possible. Looks redundant. I'd also change the thumbnails for oddities and locations to be more fitting.
-Not sure if this would be too much, but I think we could add three more to the category hub: creators (which would link to the production category page), short stories (which would link to Additional Media & Short Stories), and games (which would link to games & applications). It could be ordered like this:
Novels, Episodes, Short Stories
Characters, Oddities, Locations
Creators, Music, Games
Besides that, I like what I see. I can't say much for the mobile version, I usually just go to desktop view if I use my phone for wikia. I can at least say that this should all show in mobile mode, so it's a step in the right direction.
Hi, just saw your edits to the Kizumonogatari movie article, and I wanted to let you know how impressed I am. I personally found the Presentation section of the article a fascinating read. Good work, and thank you for your excellent contributions!
